太陽の塔が作られた頃は高度成長期の絶頂で、日本中が進歩、GNPに自信満々の時代だった。そこへ万国博。恐らく全体が進歩主義、モダニズム一色になることは目に見えていた。そこで私は逆に時空を越えた、絶対感。馬鹿みたいに、ただどかんと突っ立った「太陽の塔」を作ったのだ。現代の情報への激しい挑みの象徴として。
