うさこちゃんが誕生したのは1955年、ブルーナさんが休暇を海辺ですごしていたときのことです。息子がぬいぐるみのうさぎで遊んでいるそばで、ブルーナさんはいつものように絵を描いていたのですが、そのときふと子どものころペットとして飼っていたウサギのことを思い出し、スケッチブックにウサギを描いたのです。それがうさこちゃんだったのです。それからほどなくブルーナさんは、この絵から１冊の絵本をつくりました。『ちいさなうさこちゃん』です。
ブルーナさんは、ズボンよりドレスを描きたかったので女の子のウサギにしたのだそうです。
わたしたちにおなじみのぴんと耳のたったうさこちゃんの絵になったのは1963年からです。その後も、うさこちゃんの耳のまるみや顔のふくらみなど、今日までにすこしずつ変化してきました。
ブルーナさんの絵は、とてもシンプル。でも完成までに何百枚ものスケッチが重ねられているのです。
