Apple rejected Sony’s iPhone application, which would have let people buy and read e-books bought from the Sony Reader Store.
Apple told Sony that from now on, all in-app purchases would have to go through Apple, said Steve Haber, president of Sony’s digital reading division.
The move could affect companies like Amazon.com and others that sell e-book readers that compete with Apple’s iPad tablet and offer free mobile apps so customers can read their e-book purchases on other devices. An iPad owner, for instance, has not needed to own a Kindle to read Kindle books bought from Amazon.
That may now change.

Mysteries, beach-reading books, biographies, and other books with a general appeal that are read while traveling or on holidays are most suitable for e-readers. Why pay more to buy hard copies of such books when it is far more convenient to carry many books around in a digital form? Less attractive for e-readers are more technical books, such as books on economic theory or mathematics, where it is frequently necessary to go back and forth between earlier and later discussions. These books are much less likely to be popular in e-book form than the less technical and quick-read books.

Gary Beckerの超真っ当なe-book論である。
Beckerは”quick-read books”といっているけれど、たしかに小説や漫画などのストーリのリニアリティが強いものはe-bookに向いているだろうけれど、物理学のテキストや論文や、数学のテキストや論文(とくに数論などの純粋数学じゃない応用数学のもの）などはKindleやiPadで読む気がしないよな。数式みて、グラフみて、文章みて、Appendixみて、そして同時に文章と数式とグラフ見て、ということを頻繁にやるからね。
でもあれだよね、ダブルスクリーンだったら、この不具合は解消されるかも。Kindle DX DS, Kindle Deluxe Double Screen. しかもタッチパネルだ。あれ、これってニンテンドーDSのデカイやつになるということか？iPadはiPhoneのでかいヤツで、Kindleの将来バージョンはニンテンドーDSのデカイやつ。なんか素敵じゃないか。
上記以外の論点も、さすがBeckerである。e-bookはスグに紙の本に影響を与えるということはないが少し長い期間でみると確実に革命的な影響を与えるとか、すでにデジタル化により変化がおきている音楽業界や映像コンテンツ業界と同じことが出版業界にも起こるだろうからそのことをよくアナロジーとして勉強しろとか。Beckerのこの論考は必読である。

なんともすごいevercookie。”never forget”というサブタイトルの通りユーザー情報をありとあらゆる場所に保存する。HTTP Cookiesはもちろん、RGB情報にかえてHTML5のCanvas tagに埋めるとか、HTML5のありとあらゆるナンチャラStrageに保存するとか。
個人情報セキュリティを喚起するためのものだろうけれど、やりすぎ…。
